Lift Station Overview
Originally designed for individual subdivisions and small communities, the above grade wastewater lift station in Camden County, MO has been popular for many years.
Situated directly over the wet well, the station’s suction pipes extend down into the sewage from the pump station. As sewage fills the wet well, a vacuum pumps sucks up sewage to the station. A water sensing probe confirms the pump is primed, and the pump starts. Typical pumping rates are up to 600-750GPM for a 500-600 home community.
An alternate option to the top-mounted design is a self-priming station. The above grade self-priming station uses the pump design itself to prime the pump. While this style of pump seems simpler, it has poor efficiency and increased operation and maintenance costs.
Regardless of the lift station type, the drawback is the same: Rags plugging a pump can create a maintenance issue. Thankfully, the use of a vortex impeller eliminates impeller plugging.
Thanks to the general reliability and high capacity of factory-built lift stations, they’re optimal in subdivision developments, smaller towns, pumping to wastewater treatment plants and schools.
